Vicky Blodwell

Vicky Blodwell

Expertise: - Vicky is both a Director and the Head of Legal Practice as well as the Complaints Handling Director. Vicky is a serious injury specialist, dealing with claims arising from road traffic accidents as well as accidents at work and in public places. She was appointed as a Director in 2013. Vicky prides herself on offering practical advice which is easy to understand. Her approach to clients centres on empathy, with a focus upon clients’ rehab needs at early stages to ensure that interim payments are provided to help them rebuild their lives. She is conscious of the bigger picture and works to ensure that clients’ families are not overlooked.

Experience: - Vicky began her legal career at Russell Jones and Walker and qualified upon joining DBS Law. Vicky also holds her Higher Rights of Audience. Her most notable cases include reaching a settlement for a woman who developed Chronic Pain Syndrome after she was hit by a car. The matter settled at the sum of £335,000 which covered care and assistant for the rest of the client’s life. More recent cases have included settling a claim for a lady who had been knocked down outside a petrol station after she sustained facial injuries and fractures to the leg, arm and back. The client was left unable to work again, and with Vicky’s help was able to gain a six-figure settlement of £318,000. She has also been praised recently for her successful settlement of a hit-and-run case, in which the client sustained multiple fractures and dental injuries, in the sum of £115,000.

Andrew Scott

Andrew Scott

Expertise:- Andrew is a member of the Law Society’s personal injury panel and APIL and has conducted a wide variety of personal injury and clinical negligence cases over many years and has a wealth of experience in general litigation work.

In the last 7 years Andrew has acquired and developed an expertise in all aspects of contested probate work ranging from challenging wills for lack of mental capacity, undue influence and lack of knowledge and approval, to making and defending claims for clients under the Inheritance Act.

Experience:- Andrew joined Andersons in 1990 becoming a partner in 1994 and a Director at DBS Andersons in October 2013.

Andrew has recovered large six figure sums for clients who have been injured during the birthing procedure and for a client whose broken neck was not diagnosed and properly treated. He also acted for one of the contractors in the Wembley Stadium litigation.

Interests:- Andrew is an avid tennis player and a member of his local club. When not on the tennis court, he enjoys skiing, attending the gym and playing golf.

Jonathan Haigh

Jonathan Haigh

Expertise: - Jonathan is a qualified Chartered Accountant and also an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Experience: - Before joining DBS Law he spent 17 years working in an accountancy practice in Birmingham, providing audit, accountancy and taxation services to an extensive range of clients, with Legal firms being his speciality. Jonathan is responsible for overseeing the accounts department and maintaining budgetary control for the company. He aims to ensure that all staff members within the department are given the opportunity to gain excellent knowledge and expertise.

Interests: - Jonathan is a keen sailor and can be found on the water racing dinghies most weekends. He is also a RYA dinghy instructor teaching both adults and children to sail.

Angela Fitzpatrick

Angela Fitzpatrick

Expertise:- Angela is Head of the Personal Injury department with over 25 years experience representing injured Claimants and their families. Her practice encompasses all aspects of Claimant Personal Injury claims. Angela specialises in catastrophic, high value injury claims including spinal injuries, amputees, brain injury, and fatal accidents.

She is currently representing clients with complex regional pain arising from a work accident resulting in severe disability and clinical negligence cases involving cancer misdiagnosis .

She is committed to pursuing complex claims to ensure justice for injured victims both on liability but also ensuring access to early and proactive rehabilitation. Working with world class experts in medical and care needs to ensure clients can rebuild their lives following serious injuries. Having represented clients who have lost loved ones in work place accidents, in vehicle collisions or on holiday Angela prides herself on ensuring that all her client’s needs are achieved in a compassionate and sensitive manner.

She has outstanding knowledge and experience and for 22 years, with 13 years as a Partner, at a National Claimant Law firm where she represented Trade Union and Staff Association members pursuing a wide variety of Personal Injury claims. She has a particular interest in claims involving cyclists who have sustained Brain and spinal injuries having for many years represented members of a National Cycling Organisation. She supports and campaigns for better road safety for cyclists and pedestrians with the departments ongoing education of road safety for Key Stage 2 children in Birmingham that reaches over 3,000 children every year in Birmingham. The Legal 500 is the Michelin Guide to the Legal profession, it recommends practices and practitioners from around the UK after contacting clients. Angela Fitzpatrick has been singled out by the publication for high praise again this year for her excellent work with seriously injured clients.

Experience:- Angela has dealt with numerous complex Criminal Injuries Compensation Appeals and provided training and education on this subject. In oneyear alone she successfully appealed 3 CICA decisions obtaining damages of over £1.3million for clients from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.

In 2013, she concluded a claim valued in the region of £5million involving a pedestrian who suffered a brain injury as a consequence of a road accident. In April 2015, she successfully concluded a complex Civil High Court action for clients involved in a serious motorway collision. The defendant had escaped all criminal charges brought by the CPS by alleging that he had lost control of the vehicle because of “an unheralded vasovagal syncope (a transient loss of awareness/consciousness). A condition that case law shows has led to many acquittals and such reports are relied upon by insurers to defend these cases. Undeterred and accessing evidence from internationally recognised Syncope experts the action was brought before the High Court. The High Court action for damages for these seriously injured innocent clients was strenuously defended by the drivers insurance company via their solicitors throughout. The case was listed for a lengthy trial at the High Court in June 2015. The action successfully settled with substantial damages for her clients shortly before trial.

She is a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers, Birmingham Law Society Specialist Personal Injury Group and Birmingham Medico Legal Society.

Faizal Essat

Faizal Essat

Expertise: – Faizal is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and has gone on to secure advocacy rights and has also qualified as a Legal Executive Advocate. His experience is principally in litigation and has handled large value complex litigation claims. He was also the Head of Litigation at the Leicestershire County Council where he undertook litigation and advisory work at local government level. Faizal also worked as Head of Legal in industry where he advised on all aspects of commercial agreements and dispute resolution issues arising out of trademarks and intellectual property issues.

Experience:- Faizal acted on a group personal injury claim acting for seven claimants who were injured following exposure to the Legionella bacteria. The range of injuries amongst claimants varied and the total damages secured in total exceeded £1 million.

Faizal has also undertaken industrial disease claims and has also successfully secured damages for clients injured by exposure to asbestos. Some of the damages have been recovered for British-based claimants in the USA where Faizal worked alongside American lawyers.

In respect of non-personal injury related claims, Faizal acted for a local authority in the Technologies and Construction Court in respect of a contract dispute and the Council were faced with a claim which was valued at £40 million. This was a complex dispute and Faizal worked with a leading QC and junior counsel in dealing with the various issues and also conducted mediation meetings and advised the executive management committee of the local authority. The claim was successfully defended.

In addition to the legal work that Faizal undertakes as part of his work he also commits a significant amount of time in undertaking pro bono and advisory work in the community. He has received various national awards and was voted pro bono lawyer of the year by the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and was also the inaugural winner of the DLA Paul Nicholls Memorial Foundation Award for excellence in Pro Bono work.

Interests: – Faizal has a keen interest in following rugby and cricket. He is an avid supporter of the Leicester Tigers and follows the Indian Premier League with great interest. He also plays golf whenever he can but admits that time is often an issue. Faizal is also a keen cook and has a real interest in Indian cuisine and often helps his brother-in-law who operates a commercial kitchen cooking for parties and weddings.

Gursharan Bunger

Gursharan Bunger

Expertise: - Gursharan qualified as a Solicitor in 2002 and specialises in Private Client Law. Gursharan’s expertise within this discipline include the Administration of Estates (Probate), making Wills, Tax planning, Trusts and administration of the same, Lasting Powers of Attorneys, Deputyship Applications and Elderly Client advice.

Experience: - Gursharan has 11 years of experience in private client work and has represented a large variety of Clients, from those in a High Street firm to high net worth clients in large city firms. Gursharan enjoys dealing with complex Probate matters which have been complicated by mentally incapacitated executors/beneficiaries or those which involve contentious issues. Gursharan had dealt with a number of complex high net worth matters which have often proven difficult and has brought such matters to a successful conclusion. Gursharan holds a free weekly legal surgery at a Temple in Wolverhampton where she has developed some excellent links with members of the community.

Expertise: - Kristel is a qualified solicitor who specialises in residential property law. Kristel is the Team Leader and Chair of DBS Law’s niche Greek Desk providing legal solutions to the Greek and Cypriot communities.

Experience: - Kristel has a number of years’ experience in the property field and has represented a large number of individuals and lenders. Whilst training, Kristel was awarded the Law Society Trainee Solicitor of the Year award  in 2007, and subsequently written articles for several newspapers and lectured at the University she attended, highlighting the difficulties law students can face in trying to secure a training contract and not to give up. Kristel has been providing residential legal advice for over 7 years and has always delivered a high level of service with a clear focus on the best interests of the client. Kristel adds value to the service provided by expertly accommodating the needs of lenders and estate agents in a professional manner. Leighann joined the Commercial Property department at DBS Law Limited in February 2015 after leaving Enoch Evans LLP where she worked as a Senior Solicitor since qualifying as a Solicitor in 2004.

Sarah Begley

Sarah Begley

Expertise: - Sarah specialises in employment law and is competent in advising employees and businesses alike in relation to their employment law issues. Sarah is skilled in matters of HR support as well as contentious Employment Tribunal work.

Experience: - Sarah has over 6 years’ experience of specialist employment law advice. She undertook her training contract at a firm in Coventry and ‘cut her teeth’ doing predominantly Claimant work. From the very outset of her training, she undertook such cases from start to finish including the advocacy stage in the Employment Tribunal. Sarah achieved a number of successful results that were reported upon in the local press.

In more recent years, Sarah has expanded her experience to include Respondent work and has now built up a number of trusted clients who are keen to retain Sarah as their go-to employment law adviser. Sarah has also developed her skills in the non-contentious side of employment law such as drafting contracts, policies/procedures, and post-termination restrictions.

Interests: - Tamara loves spending time with her familyand getting lost a in a good book, listing John Grisham and Jo Nesbo as her favourite authors. She tries to stay fit by attending the gym as often as possible and mainly works on cardio activities.
