Bringing Law to Life

Brake is the national road safety charity and we exist for a simple reason - because every 30 seconds someone, somewhere in the world, is killed in a road crash.  Brake has three key objectives; to support anyone bereaved or injured in a road crash, to campaign to stop the carnage on our roads and to educate schools, communities and companies to help keep everyone safe on the roads.  Visit www.brake.org.uk for more information.

Brake also coordinates national Road Safety Week, running 21st – 28th November 2011. Brake founded the Week as an annual event to heighten awareness of the extent of carnage on our roads, and the steps everyone can take to stop these needless deaths and injuries year-round. Road Safety Week is a crucial event that aims to inspire all companies, educators and communities to promote road safety during the Week and beyond! Visit www.roadsafetyweek.org.uk for more information about ways to get involved.

Brake is delighted that DBS Law has decided to support Brake by becoming a Corporate Partner and by sponsoring a review and reprint of our support literature for children.

Children have particular needs following the death of someone close in a road crash. Brake has produced two important books: a children’s book for children of any age and their adult carers to read together, called ‘Someone has died in a road crash’, which helps children to understand how they are feeling and how to cope; and an accompanying guide for professionals. By sponsoring Brake, DBS Law have ensured that all families who need these resources can now receive them free of charge for the next three years.

DBS Law launches youth road safety campaign in Birmingham schools for Road Safety Week

DBS Law Ltd has launched a road safety education project ‘Clock on to Safety’ for school children throughout England & Wales. The project started with a visit to two Primary Schools in Birmingham during Road Safety Week 21st – 28th November 2011.

Our Personal Injury lawyers visited the schools to educate kids, in an entertaining and friendly way, using an animated film and an interactive presentation to get them thinking about staying safe while crossing the road.

The film featured CTS Clock. He delivered a serious message to the children whilst wearing a friendly face. A human size CTS Clock joined the presentation too, helping to fix the youngsters attention on the important message.

The idea for the national schools tour sprang from the company’s involvement with the road safety charity Brake. Brake campaigns for measures to reduce the number of deaths on our roads. They also provide support for children and families who are bereaved as a result of a car crash.

The company is corporate sponsors of the charity and our employees are involved in fund raising activities throughout the year. We were moved to go the extra mile when Brake shared with us the horrific statistics for the death and serious injury of young drivers on our roads. It is a sad fact that boys and girls between the ages of 17-24 are four times more likely to die in a road accident than older people. At least 15 young people are killed in car crashes every week.

The risks for young people are on the rise. Today’s more powerful cars combined with the recklessness of youth are a recipe for disaster. That’s why we decided to help get a strong road safety message out to children long before they get behind the wheel. You can find helpful advice about keeping young people safe on the roads on www.brake.org.uk. There are also opportunities for you to help Brake with their important work.

After the presentation the children were asked to design a poster to raise awareness of road safety amongst other children. All the work produced was displayed in the Waterhall Gallery in Birmingham just before Christmas. The competition was judged by local artist Paul Hipkiss. Paul was very impressed by the standard of art and the children’s level of understanding of the issue. Six winners were chosen who received tickets for the CBSO family Christmas concert.
